SURJ is a statewide, grassroots organization dedicated to reforming
Delaware’s criminal justice system. We are committed to educating
policymakers, our 3,000 members, and the public-at-large of measures
proven to ensure a higher quality of justice, promote public safety, and
reduce corrections costs.
Delaware's prisons are overcrowded;
far too high a percentage of offenders
released from prison end up back inside; and we spend too much money to put too many
people behind bars while failing to take advantage of more effective,
more just, and less costly alternatives to incarceration.
To address
these challenges SURJ members advocate for: sentencing reform,
particularly for non-violent offenders; increased access to quality substance abuse and mental health treatment; and
the successful reentry of ex-offenders into the community.
